DETROIT (AP) — Volkswagen of America issued false statements this week saying it will change its model title to “Voltswagen,” as a approach to stress its dedication to electrical autos, solely to reverse course Tuesday and admit that the supposed title change was only a joke.
Mark Gillies, an organization spokesman, confirmed Tuesday that the assertion had been a pre-April Idiot’s Day joke, after having insisted Monday that the discharge was legit and the title change correct.
The corporate’s false launch was distributed once more Tuesday, saying the model title change mirrored VW’s change to extra battery-electric autos.
The corporate is making an attempt to alter its picture and recuperate from a 2015 scandal through which it cheated on authorities emissions checks and allowed diesel-powered autos to illegally pollute the air.
