U Illinois to Lead Planning Efforts on Community of Cybersecurity Tech Institutes
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has obtained a $2 million grant to develop a plan for making a nationwide community of technical institutes centered on cybersecurity. The purpose of the community is to deal with the cybersecurity workforce scarcity in the USA, which was estimated to be 299,000 in 2017.
The award was issued by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency to the Critical Infrastructure Resilience Institute (CIRI), housed on the college.
CIRI, established in 2015 by DHS, is a consortium of universities and public- and private-sector companions led by the college. Its focus is to create networks in academia for analysis and training that improve the resiliency of the nation’s crucial infrastructures and the companies and public entities that personal and function these programs. CIRI is certainly one of 10 facilities of excellence managed by the DHS Science and Expertise Directorate.
For the present undertaking CIRI will work with a number of different establishments, together with Auburn University, which hosts the McCrary Institute for Cyber and Critical Infrastructure Security; Purdue University, which hosts the Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS); and the University of Tulsa, which runs the Institute for Information Security (iSec). Collectively, the colleges will do analysis and collaborate in creating a consolidated plan that makes use of an educational hub-and-spoke mannequin to create a nationwide community of cybersecurity institutes for educating and coaching folks in cybersecurity practices.
